Founded by Dr Iqbal Survé, Survé Group Holdings (SGH) is an emerging multinational, which has grown in less than two decades, from a seed capital of 20 000 USD, to a current investment portfolio value of 3,5 – 4 billion USD.
The arithmetic is striking, but the more useful part of the story is the constraint the Group set itself: growth had to come with ownership transformation, employment and skills, or it did not count. Every stage below was tested against that.

Two Decades, Six Stages
- Founding
20 000 USD And A Thesis
Dr Iqbal Survé founds the Group with seed capital of 20 000 USD, on the premise that South African business could be run for social return and commercial return simultaneously.
- Early years
Health, Empowerment And The First Acquisitions
The Group builds its first operating businesses, concentrating on sectors where black ownership and management were most conspicuously absent, and where skills transfer would have the greatest downstream effect.
- Consolidation
A Listed Vehicle
The industrial interests are consolidated under a JSE-listed company, bringing public-market disclosure, governance and access to institutional capital to a majority black-owned group.
- Diversification
Media, Mobility And Marine
The portfolio broadens into media and publishing, commercial and passenger mobility, and fishing and marine brands — each held for the long term rather than traded.
- Partnership
Global Partners, African Delivery
Strategic equity partnerships with global engineering and technology firms bring capability into Sub-Saharan Africa on terms that keep meaningful ownership and delivery capacity on the continent.
- Today
An Emerging Multinational
The Group operates across six core sectors with a portfolio valued at 3,5 – 4 billion USD, and continues to measure itself on jobs created and skills transferred alongside financial return.
